audio suggestions

I have a 1966 Fastback with a USA-66 head unit (w/ IPod) and a dual speaker in the top of the dash. Was going to upgrade things a bit..

I got a rear trap door with 6x9 holes cut to replace my non cut one. I have done the Second Skin, Damplifer Pro, Spectrun and Luxury Liner so things should be well insulated. I have really lost touch with stereo components on what is good and what is not, but know my head unit is not that great..but...I do like the look of it.

I am looking for a pair of 6x9's to put in the Trap door and was also considering a 10" subwoofer. I am also considering putting some speakers in the floor kick panel.

Can someone reccommend a set of speakers for the kick panel, 6x9's for the trap door and an amp to drive all this.. Sub woofer and amp is also good for the recommendation..

Back in the day, I was an Alpine fan, but don't know if their stuff is good anymore. From a looks perspective, I like a good grill cover that is black to fade into the interior.

Thoughts??

Yes, put some speakers in the kick panels. I wished I had installed a kicker (bazooka tube) or subwoofer in Shag like I did with Red. Red's sterero system is sooooo much better sounding as compared to Shags. I love Boston Acoustics 6x9 speakers.

I was also thinking that the only issue you might need to consider is if you were planning to install a amp in the back to power the sub woofer and the 2 6x9 speakers, where are you going to put it? I didn't want to fill up the fastback's trunk with an amp, but now wish I did.

Maybe there's high powered DIN's that can power a sub woofer?

I don't know anything about this subject but when I was on the Power Tour, Kicker was one of the venue sponsors and they mentioned a small amp. that they where coming out with, you may want to check them out.

I used JL Audio speakers in the dash and kick panels but found the the sound to be loud but lacking any richness. The addition of a JL 750watt 5 channel amp and a pair of 12 inch subs has vastly improved the sound. It actually sounds pretty good even with the top down. Sacraficing the trunk space not a huge issue as its a weekend cruiser.

I have a distinct feeling, I'll be tearing into Shag's stereo system shortly and I'll blame Todd for bringing up this issue.

Here I always thought the only sound required for cruising was produced under the hood.

we are taking a little different approach with our 65 fastback. We have installed twin speakers in the dash and kick panel speakers up front. Currently we are running them straight off the Retrosound One deck. It sounds terrible. We are working on the installation of two Kicker Class D amps, one four channel for the front four speakers and a single channel amp to power the two 10" Kicker subs that will be mounted in custom boxes in the trunk, to the sides in the trunk drop off area. The amps will be mounted in custom enclosure on the rear taillight panel, one each side of the fuel filler neck. I have it all worked out in my head, just need to get to building.

If needed I also have two interior side panels with speaker cut outs to try if I don't like it the first time around.

I have 1 dash speaker. That's it. PO put in an alpine cd player. Why? With only 1 speaker its pretty useless.

But with 4-5 speakers, it's not.

No kick panel speaker option for 70. vert, so no package shelf. Tried speakers in the trunk can't hear them at all.

Todd:

There are a zillion companies out there making very good audio equipment so I don't think you can get a 'one' answer. Most people go with what they have used or heard in other people's car. Alpine does and still makes good speakers and audio equipment.
I have a 68 coupe. I know longer require require (want) a system to shakes the neighbors windows. I have eventually settled on a 5 channel amp that will run some quick panel speakers and in my case 6 x 9 in the rear package tray and a small 10' subwoofer. Space was important too me as I did not want to take up the whole rear of my trunk. How much is different with each person. My subwoofer sits in a small .54 enclosure. Not every subwoofer will sound good in a small enclosure so if you go this route you have to do your homework. I went with a very small infinity amp (5 channel).
This system will not blow your ears off. I was into Sound Quality over pure power. If you have liked Alpine in the past I see no reason not to continue with what you know best. I have had trouble fitting decent speakers into the kick panels. A lot of the speakers wont fit (depth) into the premade kick panels. Once again you have to do your homework.

Hey!!! don't blame me.. This is a "while "I" am at it" thing. I pulled out my interior to add sound/thermal deadening and an A/C. The wiring was a mess, so I am fixing that.. While the interior is out, I want all the wiring I might need added... that led to the stereo thing as mine lacks anything desireable. Till now, I have been happy with the throaty Spin Master exhause, but the kiddos keep putting thier tunes on the Ipod and asking for more sound.. Now, I am adding some more power and more speakers...

Like you, I like good sounding music over power.. I love the look of the USA-66, but it sounds horrible with the dual speaker dash install. I won't be going over board, but want something that is better than what I have now..

I competed in sq competitions when i was in high school and college. The way to make them sound great is build some sealed kick panels with 5.25 - 6.5 in seperates or coaxials with an ass load of power. Rear 6x9s aren't super necessary in a coupe. Get a good, name brand four channel and run the fronts and then bridge the rear to run the sub.

Oh and lots of dynamat!

If you don't want to run a sub, you might check into some of these:

Pioneer TS-A6993R

I am only running 25w/ch into them, they would probably sound better with more power but they put out enough bass I didn't feel the need for a sub. But I like a clean bass signal, no muddy BOOM for me.

YMMV.
