axles stuck

Trying to remove axles on an 8" rear end but they won't budge. Attached the drum backwards, pounded, pried...Am I missing something? Thanks

Did you remove the 4 retaining nuts from the backing plate?
If yes the keep working at it and they will pop out.

Assuming the 4 retainer nuts are removed and the drum trick has not allowed removal I would suggest heading to your local auto parts store & rent a slide hammer with puller attachment. Will look something like this:

Those are the best tool to use. In a pinch, I have used a length of chain with something heave on the end. I would bolt one end to the studs and give it a yank. It works a lot like the slid hammer but not as well.

I have one of those slide hammers but when I attemped to pull Shag's old axles, even that tool didn't work. I then applied some heat to the axle housing where the bearing resides, then used the slide hammer and whoola! They came right out.

Heat around the bearing where it seats and wack the crap out of it with a hammer. I use a 8lb sledge with a short handle and it works on most anything I hit. Sometimes I've gotta hit things twice. Photos would be nice.
