Camshaft lesson..

Hey guys, I have been trying to find out as much as possible about engines and what not.
But I don't know the difference between stage 1/2/3 etc camshafts. Would someone mind giving me a quick lesson? Teach me.

Those are just generic terms with no definitive meaning. They are just used by some manufacturers to say how many "notches" above stock, for example, the various cam grinds represent.
What you really want to learn/understand are the particular key points in a cam design. Start with things like "lift" and "duration". Then dig deeper to understand how a cam lobe is shaped to provide very precise valve movement relative to engine rpm, etc. Learn how a cam can be made to deliver a powerband within a specific rpm range. Learn why one cam can provide huge low end torque but another high rpm horsepower but one cam can't do both.
Any of the cam manufacturer sites have decent info and the web itself has tons. You don't need to get it all just understand the basics. And know to call a guy who makes his living at it when its time to order one up. Don't get a cam just because your buddy recommends it. Way too much involved and you will likely disappoint yourself and forfeit a better performing engine.

also remember that its a "whole package" that needs to work together, bore, stroke, cubes, fuel delivery/induction & exhaust all need to be compatible. dont do like some & simply stick the biggest cam & carb on a motor or you will be disappointed.
