fastback full quarter replacement

Anybody have any pointers on this? I removed the lead seam between the roof and the quarter and find the roof actually sits on top of the quarters :chair I don't want to booger up the roof so pointers and tips would be great. Pics would be :pbj

You have a row of spot welds on top of the roof skin, then you need to go inside the vent opening and drill those spot welds out. You have 3 layers of metal to drill through.

Any pics? I think this is going to suck.

Are these what you are talking about?

Some guys use a spot weld cutter to cut through the roof skin and quarter, leaving the inner structure intact, then peel the roof flange back in order to grind the remaining spot weld centers and then to fit the new quarter up, weld it, grind the welds flat, roll the roof flange back down, then weld it.
I replaced both quarters and roof skin, so I didn't have to worry about peeling the roof back. I've seen pics that don't make it look too difficult... probably the bigger pain is cleaning all the lead off in order to weld it all back together.

So the roof and the quarter holes were spot welded to the inner structure together? Meaning if you drill thru both to the inner structure there won't be anymore spot welds of the quarter under the roof? Peeling it back doesn't sound very easy considering I don't want to damage it. Shoot the roof is one of the only original pieces left on the car :whis

Well it was 8-9 years ago when I did it... so don't recall if the spot welds are independent or not... In that case I would start by drilling out just the roof spot welds first, then gently peel the roof up a little (it's only 0.030 thick). if needed, it wouldn't hurt if you needed to slice a few small relief cuts in the recessed area. You can always weld them back up during re assembly. It's also a good idea to seam weld the joint before filling the cavity. Actually I like how rusty welds a patch in the cavity instead of using filler.

I like how it does that also. I'm considering it, but there is a style line up there that will be a booger to recreate.
I'm not opposed to relief cuts, just want to make sure I have a plan of attach. Cutting the welds from the inside doesn't sound terrible, but dressing the welds in there would be a booger, but I don't suppose you have to. Maybe I'll drill the roof welds out cutting thru the quarter metal and see where that gets me. Not like I have to be careful with the quarter lip anyhow.

Got a similar thread going at VMF. Guy posted this pic.

I want to be a little more careful of the roof metal.

I don't have the best pic of the former drag car but it can be done with out hurting the roof

Don't stress it so much. You are doing metal replacement, not finish work. With a welder and grinder, you can repair just about anything...

This is true, just trying to avoid too much finish work when it comes time.
