FMX or C4

Any opinions on which is better: C4 (1973) or FMX?
I have only had one FMX and it was in a car I bought for parts. I can't say they are not better but C4's have much more support in the aftermarket. They can be pretty tuff but need some modification for serious abuse.

Since you asked for opinions, and given the choices, I'd have to say the C4 is better. More support for it as Craig mentioned. Personally, I'd rather have a C6 than a C4 OR an FMX!

IIRC, the FMX is cast iron instead of aluminum & weighs a ton. i was always in the same boat with ponyman & preferred a c-6, but i think the c-4 can be modified to handle almost anything you can throw at it nowdays.

Thanks everyone. The car is equipped with a C4 that I've been thinking about rebuilding. Yesterday I saw a freshly rebuilt FMX for sale so I thought I would look to the forum for opinions.

I think I will rebuild the C4 and possibly add a stall converter.

From what I know about the transmissions mentioned is that the C4,C6 have more performance possibilities than the FMX which the others have mentioned but (from what I've read) they use more HP than the FMX. The FMX is a steel case (heavier) but it is stronger because of that. The AOD gearset was designed after the FMX gearset. Not sure what that all means but it is a decent trans. that's been around a long time.

I forgot about the FMX weighing a ton!
I tore up a lot of C4's (they were stock). I eventually put a smallblock C6 in my first Mustang and never hurt it stock and not rebuilt! It's pretty hard to hurt a C6. But I do know you can build a bullet proof C4 with $$$
If you are not going to wind it over 6,000 rpms in first (that killed a lot of mine) then a C4 should be okay.

I honestly don't know if an FMX will bolt up behind a small block. IIRC it'll bolt to a big block or (at smallest), a 351C/M. It really was never considered to be a performance tranny. AOD's are another good choice, but just like a C4, they can be built to hold some pretty good HP, but need work to do so.

p.s. Don't get me wrong about an AOD, I'm putting one in my coupe. It's behind the bone stock EFI 5.0 it came from the factory with though. No upgrades necessary! :bowdown

You need guts from a 4R70W and use them in your AOD (yes they fit). Several articles on the net on how to do this. These beefed up AOD's are hard to beat. I would not go through the pain of installing a tranny and not use on of these. Also, I have an FMX behind the 302 in one of my Mach Ones. It's all original matching numbers.

The FMX was the standard transmission behind the 351W in 1969, and I believe it was used extensively in later Ford products behind the small blocks. The early 351Cs had a C6 behind them IIRC.

If it were me, I'd go with the AOD before I beefed a C4. Three speed trannys limit the rear gearing you can practically run with on the highway. My convertible has a C4 with 3.55 gears and turns around 4K at 80 mph. My son has a SportsRoof with an FMX and 3.73 gears and it howls at highway speeds (the engine, not the gears). Nearly undriveable, and the gas mileage on both cars sucks.

Hey Ken:

How's life in Lincoln? Until two years ago, I had a dear cousin that lived there and I remember visiting her and JohnPro the same day, just a few months before John was diagnosed. Unfortunately, both of them are now gone. :shrug

Regards, Jeff

Another thought is that a FMX uses different yoke, Trans mount cross member, 164 tooth flexplate. That is what I had to change when I whet to a c4 from FMX. Just a thought.

Hi Jeff:
How are you? How's life as a married man? I think the last time I saw you was at your wedding. Also the last time I saw JohnPro, Mike and Craig IIRC. Do you guys still do the drag race day at Sacramento Speedway annually? How about the cruise to Knotts? I was looking at the 50th celebration in 2014 in Vegas. Are any of the ex-VMFers considering taking that drive? Could be fun. :steer

We love it up here in Lincoln. A little warmer than the Bay Area in the summer (107*) and a little cooler in the winter (28*), but all-in-all, a pretty nice place if you ignore the rattlesnakes. With the Lincoln Hills Del Webb community right across the road, there's lots of old farts to keep us company. A bit of a struggle over the handicapped parking, however. Up here when you hear a siren you pretty much figure it aint the cops. We bought a nice house (2,500 s.f. single story rancher with 4 br. and 3 ba.) with the proceeds from the house in Fremont and still have enough left to pay my "fair share" in capital gains taxes. :sarc

I'm looking forward to seeing some of you guys at car shows in the future.

Best Regards,
Ken

Ken, I had no idea you moved up this way, I am in West Sacramento, SacBill is in the Sacramento area too. We checkout some car shows during the better climate & we'll have to get together then.
