Gas Tank changing tips?

I am swapping over to a 22 gallon with drain plug in my 65.

Anyone have any good tips to add to my list?

Install sender while the new tank is out of the car on a workbench.
Use petroleum jelly on the rubber gasket to keep it in place and not tear it while putting on the ring.
Use some Teflon tape on the drain plug in case of leaks.

If you use Teflon tape make sure that you use the yellow.

You may know this already but just in case:
- Gently use a floor jack to unstick the tank from the trunk
- Does your new tank have a screw holes. If not you'll have to drill. Test-fit the tank and use a marker to shade the areas where you will drill the holes. Remove tank and drill away.
- Be sure to replace the nasty sticky body sealer between the trunk sheet metal and the lip of the tank. Use a scraper and a wire brush to eliminate all the crud. Messy work. Then put the new sealer around the entire trunk lip and on both sides of the trunk screw holes.
- When installing the screws, gradually tighten every third one until all are snug. Then make another round to finalize the tightening. Don't overtighten, or the sticky filler will ooze all over the place. Check again in a few days.
- There may be a size difference between your fuel line and sending unit. I can't recall the size differences (possibly 3/8 & 7/16 or 5/16 & 3/8) Be prepared.
- Only fill with 1-2 gallons, run engine, put a pan under the sending unit, and let it sit overnight. Next day, check for slow leaks from the sender or the fuel lines.

Easy job, just takes time. Good luck.

Marco,
If you need help, let me know. I've done a few of them. I also have the fixture to calibrate a sending unit before you install it. I also have the sending unit locking ring wrench and extra rubber gaskets. I use Hylomar as a seal on the rubber ring.

Del65 nailed it. Yes, you need a 70 sending unit to cover the extra tall tank. Please get one with a brass float. Get some 3M strip caulking to seal in the new tank.

The tank may be able to move a bit fore & aft before you screw it down, when you test fit it, also mockup the filler neck & rubber hose to make sure they are in line to the tank. If the tank is not centered, it'll be hell trying to line up the rubber hose between the filler neck & the tank neck. (Gee, how do I know this?)

Well, I followed all the tips posted above and it turned out great. No leaks.

Now, I just have to rebuild my stereo system.
