Got the Stang dyno tuned yesterday....

All,

I towed my rig the 4.5 hours down to Bob Kurgan's shop down in Braselton, GA to have it tuned. He did the original mail order tune and since it was so close, I figured he was good for finishing up the job. For those that are unfamiliar with my setup, I'm running a 331 stroker with 170 Trick Flow heads and stage 2 cam. Holley Systemax intake with 30lb injectors.

From my research, I was expecting about 330 at the wheels with my combo.. it's not terribly radical.

After a few tunes, he was able to get a best of 355rwhp with 358 ft./lbs of torque at 5700rpm and 4400rpm respectively. This roughly translates to a little over 400hp at the crank. My air/fuel was rock solid at 13:1.. pretty much all the way through.

I did run into a slight ignition problem at near redline that Bob attributed to an inadequate ignition system.. which is stock. He suggested to upgrade to a MSD or Crane box to fix. This issue kept him from being a little more aggressive with the tune and probably cost me a a few horsepower up at the top end.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with the results considering this was my first engine build and bought the parts doing my own research. Plus, Bob fixed all of my minor drive-ability issues and mid-range power is way, way up.

Here is a vid of one of the runs:

Nice pull, very respectable numbers. Glad to see this from a 331 setup similar to mine. hope I do as well when mines running.

At what point did the stock dist. falter? Just adding a box w/o changing dist. should cure it? Just curious as I asked this question recently and consensus seemed to be that the stock dist. would be fine at least to 6K.

I started having the problems at around 4600 on... but really bad after 5000 (see the chart for reference).

Bob said that it could also be the dizzy, but doubted it since it was new (or a reman). He ordered a Crane box (6000-6440) for me to install. It seams pretty straight forward. Hopefully it'll fix my problem.

Here is the chart:

Good numbers for a SB, it's gonna be fast. What ecm are you using?

Just an update. I installed the Crane box and it totally fixed my upper RPM ignition problems.

Oh my, this thing pulls hard all the way to redline!! On of my buddies that has mildly modded 03 Cobra vert (when I say mildly I mean about 500hp to the wheels) were playing around and I could easily keep up with him much to his suprise. It helps me a lot since he has about 1000lbs on me. :)
