I added 50 horsepower for $80!!

Hey everyone,

So I've been trying to trace down a few issues since I've had my car on the road (about 3 months). The first issue was a pretty major intake manifold leak which fixed an idling issue.. when I had the intake off, I had a suspicion that the head gasket was leaking... and when I had head off I noticed that the #7 cylinder looked brand new with no carbon deposits. Thinking that the problem was either the head or intake gasket I button it up.

So even though the idle issues were cured, something still wasn't right; it just didn't seem to have the power that it should. So following a hunch, I ordered a cheap USB bore scope and sure enough, the #7 cylinder was still clean!

So I tested for spark; I had spark. I tested the fuel injector; The injector tested OK. I changed the spark plugs; No change. I tested the spark plug wire; The wire was fine. I finally got a noid light and tested the EFI harness; FAIL!! The wiring to the ECU turned out to be OK, so the problem had to be the ECU. I ordered an ECU from Autozone for $80 (with core).. and bam!! The car now runs like a raped ape. The idle is the best its ever been and the driveability is much better...

This has been pretty frustrating to diagnose, I'm glad its finally fixed. I just found 50+ extra horsepower!!! I feel like I've been keeping gasket companies business lately.

Thanks for letting me rant,

-Shannon

Pfffft. The ricers already know that a $5 sticker can add the 50 hp...why spend $80?

thanks for sharing, what is a "noid light"?

A noid light is a little light that is made to fit the injector connector of a fuel injection harness. You can rent a kit from Autozone that will work with most manufacturers... anyway, you take all the spark plug wires off the engine, and plug in the noid light to the injector plug in question and crank the engine. If it pulses when you crank, thumbs up. If not, you got a problem.

I'm learning all kinds of things in this journey into EFI. I'm also close to setting my hair on fire.
