took my car up to the shop at the entrance to my neighborhood this morn to get the carb & timing worked on. after a couple hrs, I hear a rumbling outside & it my car (they usually call when our stuff is ready, but think it was just an excuse to drive it some more). said he figured he would just come pick me up instead of me having to find a ride (yeah, right..). I jumped in & he pulled out of the driveway & hammered it. we hit 60 before getting to the end of the street (i'm the 6th house down) turned the corner then hammered it again all the way up to the main road. car runs like a bat out of hell now. they adjusted/test drove to the tune of 1/4 tank of gas & nothing broke/fell off/made noises so assume after that all my mods over the last year are fine. I sure know all the old people who live in my neighborhood saw/heard it as they were all out in their yards giving me dirty looks when I came back home...

I do have a decision to make. they said the original distributor is really sloppy inside & needs a rebuild to get the mechanical advance tightened up & working correctly with the vacuum advance. for now, they set the mechanical advance & have the vacuum advance plugged. gave me the number for a guy here locally who is supposed to be the best around at setting up distributors. should I have this one reworked or should I change over to a duraspark setup?

I am not an expert but not sure I'd bother rebuilding the original unit if you are still using points, assuming the rest of the engine is not stock. I have a duraspark diz (bought used with the duraspark box for only $50 approx 7 years ago) and is currently triggered by a Summit-brand digital spark box with a built-in rev limiter, I did use the duraspark box for several years w/o a problem. The cost to rebuild the original diz is likely more than the cost for a used or reman duraspark diz, but you then need to add for the cost of a box (Summit, MSD or duraspark)

I was thinking stock duraspark. i'm really not sure what, if anything, has been done to this motor. cant be much as it still had the factory 2bbl carb & intake when I bought it. i'm also in no hurry to build a motor for it, i'll run this one until it gives out, then maybe change to a 5.0 roller with a little better than stock cam.

we used to run MSD & Mallory stuff on the racecars years ago & always had to change out the module in the dizzy or monkey with the msd. stuff never seemed to work right for any length of time. i'm too old now to spend time on the side of the road fixing something all the time...

A duraspark in a vintage engine bay looks out of place to me. Have you considered using a module in a stock dizzy and getting it re-curved?

I had good luck running a Petronix ignitor setup in my '66 before I sold it. Pretty painless...pull points, install Petronix and pretty much forget it.

Got rid of the points under the cap but didn't have to deal with the extra box, etc.

Steve, I'm not using my stock distributor at the moment and it was tuned up about 4yrs. ago by the old guy you've probably been referred to. I've got the electronic conversion by Crane in it and the points just in case. You're welcome to use it as I'm debating getting the Summit one. I could drop it by this week probably.

guys name is larry ball. name sounds familiar, think maybe he was racing back when I was.

#%@* car is going back in the shop tomorrow... after running so well for them last week, it went into the toilet today. the rain finally stopped for a while today, so thought I would drive it to the market. sucker wouldn't idle. whenever you took your foot off the gas it would die. got it back home, pulled the air cleaner assy & gas is pouring out of the secondaries. its flooding bad...dammit!

Sorry to hear it. Seems like it's always something with these cars, but at least it was easy to diagnose.

thats crazy!!! O and BTW im never home during the week days...Work til 5 downtown so anything that happens in the village...stays in the village lol

I've used the Pertronix on my old TR6 with great results. Couldn't tell that it was installed at all and it performed well.

About the waking up the neighbors...

After a few of these:

I've got sort-of a reputation too.. I've been asked by several neighbors when I was putting mufflers on the Mustang. I'm sure they love when I fire that thing up at 6:30am when I take to work. :yah

Unfortunately, I don't have any parts for it anymore.. but I learned quite a bit about them during my build. I have a large list of documents and vendors that I used to put it together. Let me know if I can help with anything.

The engine was cammed and balanced with a worked head, roller rockers, headers, and Jag XJ carbs. The transmission was upgraded with a Toyota 5sp. A Quaife LSD differential kept the wheels from spinning. I installed Nylatron bushings with lowering springs and adjustable sway bars front and rear.

For what it was, it was pretty fast. I know I surprised a few v-8 Mustangs a time or two. :yah

The interior was upgraded to leather with a custom dash.

I've seen a couple guys doing the BMW swap, but the SBF is a natural fit. its two inches wider & taller than the original I6, but the weight is exactly the same. the t5 also has the same general dimensions as the orig 4 spd.

heres a link to a tr4 like mine with the V8 conversion:

right now, i'm trying to track down a set of upper & lower control arms/spindles/steering links from a tr6. they had upgraded ball joints & -3 deg. caster set in the design vs the older setup with 0 deg. may pick your brain later when I get around to starting on it. have to get this mustang straightened out first....
