New door handle mechanism, now handle is crooked

I replaced my door handle mechanism yesterday (now I don't have to open the window to let myself out). Simple, straightforward job, but now the '68 style handle doesn't sit straight. I thought about elongating the mounting holes so I could twist the mechanism more clockwise, but I don't really want to do that. I could use a new handle I guess, but has anyone else had this issue and did a new (repro) handle sit straighter on the repro shaft? The passenger side is perfect, and may still be the original shaft.

I can't seem to insert the pictures with my text like I could before--see the pictures below.

Aren't the handles and mechanisms splined so you could remove the handle and rotate it clockwise just one notch?

Whats it look like if you remount one tooth down?

Even worse. The picture shows the best alignment I can get.

If you remove the door panel and loosen the bolts for the remote control piece, you might be able to rotate it enough to get it to align correctly.

It's already twisted as far clockwise as it'll go. That's why I thought about slotting the holes a little, but that would affect the linkage rod at the same time, possibly not allowing me enough rod travel to open the door.

I wonder if it's just a "luck of the draw" type of thing. :shrug

I wonder if you can locate it as far counter clockwise as it will go, and maybe then you can use the spline to align it a little better.

Nope, tried that too. There's not much wiggle room at the screw holes and turning it far counter-clockwise and moving one spline is still worse than the picture shows. That's the best I can get.

I guess I'm wondering if Scott Drake purposely made their repro handles and shafts about half a spline off from the originals, thereby requiring the purchase of both pieces to get proper alignment.

Or is it just the luck of the draw?

FWIW...I bought a new Scott Drake handle (sure is purty), and it sits almost straight now (a little too clockwise). Next time I have the door panel off, I should be able to get it straight by twisting the shaft mechanism as far CCW as it'll go.

An added bonus is that the hub is just a tiny bit smaller in diameter, so the chromed escutcheons I bought fit perfectly.

Now I need to get one for the other side, and a new shaft mechanism as well.
