New Owner of a 70 Mach 1

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to post in introductory thread. I just bought my dads 70 mach 1 from him after some cinvincing since it was sitting in the garage not driven for the last 10 years. He bought it in 82 for $600. I grew up with the car, and seen it on and off the road many times. Now at 29 I finally talked him into selling it to me for 3k. It will probably end up being a project we both work on as I fund the parts. It's in what I think is decent condition especially for the price but i needs a bit of work. This might be blasphemy but I owned a 94 corvette from 2001 until last year. At the end of the run it had a 383 stroker, lowered, white on black. But I got rid of it last summer. Got the itch again and bought the muscle car I grew up with.

The last couple weeks we went ahead and put in new calipers, brake booster, master cylinder and line hoses trying to track down locked caliper, and then a soft pedal. Embarrassingly the calipers were on the wrong side.

The car runs decent, but to get it back on the road the rims/tires have to go, per the pics they are pretty old school not balanced and in my opinion look rediculous. I will probably be jumping to the wheel tire section next for some suggestions input. The over all plans for the car are to get it running reliably, get body work done and painted black, as for rims and I know this can be a bit touchy but I will be going 18's, not that I don't like the classic look of 15's but I love the looks of bigger rims on these cars. Most of the fixes are cosmetic at this point.

Look forward to being a member and learning what I can about these cars and wrenching on it in my spare time.

Welcome!

I took the liberty of seeing where your IP address locates you and you appear to be in Minnesota. I grew up next door in NoDak and my nephew lives in Minneapolis.

Good to have you on board.

Car looks like it's in pretty good shape. I like the old school, fresh out of the time machine look.

You'll find that not many people here will question you're decision to run 18s.

Yep, I'm in Minneapolis. Had a brief stint in tallahasse florida to record an album with a buddy a grew up with, but moved back after a couple months. My girlfriends family is from and some still living in North Dakota, I always forget the city though.

My main concern right now is to just get the wheels taken care of so I can at least drive it, right now it rides extremely rough because of the tires. The rear leaf springs are set at the highest so I will put those back lower and might drop it another inch depending on how I like the look.

Forgot to mention. The car has a 351 cobra jet(engine code q) in it right now out of a 71 cougar. We also have a 351 windsor that needs a rebuild. From what I have read the windsor probably isn't original and most 70s had clevelands, I could be wrong though.

The car in your sig is amazingly awesome, anymore pics elsewhere?

Tons of pics in my galleries.

My nephew is from Osnabrock NoDak. He was a bass player for a band that was comprised of him and some cats he grew up with.
I think they just busted up the band a couple years ago. He now does rock posters for a lot of the local talent.

As far as the ride goes on you mach, it's probably related mostly to the shackles and shocks. Dropping the car back down and tucking the tires in will certainly help.

I think I recall hearing somewhere that a few 2 barrel 70s were windsor motors but most 70s got clevelands. The cougar engine is a cleveland, correct?

Fridays nights are kinda quiet around here. There's plenty of great info to keep you occupied in the mean time.

Welcome to the fix. Nice looking project. Neat that it seems like your dad might be enjoying wrenching the car with you? Enjoy the bonding.

Welcome nice looking car, enjoy working on it wiyh your Dad. 70 had an "H" or "M" code in the VIN M=4bbl Cleveland, H= 2bbl
Windsor or Cleveland supposedly a beginning of production they were using up Windsors that were left from 69 production.

Thanks for the welcomes. As far as the cougar engine goes, I'm not 100%. Still a bit green about the cars/options/engines etc.. Im sure over the next few weeks I will be taking in everything I can.

If you ever end up wanting to rebuild/warm up the Cleveland motor, you probably should check out this website:

Looks like a nice project, and I think you are doing the right thing by getting it drivable first... then you can see what if anything you don't like or want to change about it when the time comes to take it off the road & tear into it.

in short
-welcome to the fix !!! You will enjoy it !!!
-nice looking car .enjoy it while you are working on it together with your dad !!
-regarding the car. first brakes , then suspension , then engine and driveline , interior and last , paint.
In that order IMHO
Welcome to STANGFIX :beer

ps we all here like pictures......alot of them .

Thats pretty much the plan. The brakes are working fantastic right now, then the wheels/suspension. After thats done I will probably just enjoy it for the summer. For this first spring/summer it's about getting it back on the road and enjoying it a bit. Then I can kind of game plan what I want to do engine wise, fixes/mods, with the MN winter I have 4 months to get it running tip top(if that ever possible), then next spring I will hopefully be able to do paint/body as the icing on the cake. Im really not in a huge rush with it though. Always something to fix and work on, thats alot of the fun for me. Just tinkering on the weekends.

Just wanted to say thanks again for the warm welcome.
