New shocks for the '66

I had them on my car when I finished the build, the promptly changed over to a set of Bilsteins....not that I "needed" too, but Shaun at SorT had a great deal on them. It was a noticible difference between the two. Not that the GR2's were bad, but the bilsteins are better....

No personal experience, but I haven't heard many happy customers. Bilstein's or Koni's are the better way to spend lots of cash!

GR-2's would be a step above the economy Monroe shocks. They're smoother than the Gas-A-justs, but they won't ride as nice or handle as well as a set of Edelbrocks or Bilsteins

I guess before I buy new shocks I better figure out how to replace them...

So, where in the world is the access to the upper rear shock mount, and how do I get to it?

Please tell I don't have to remove the fold down seat...

No, just that rear flat section. It has screws accessible from the top, then you will see the rubber plugs for the shoch mounts.

FYI, Koni's are on sale right now for around $107 each.

I have the GR-2's on all 4 and for <$100 they're pretty good for a DD car. I don't find them mushy or harsh, they ride better than monroe, etc. as mentioned. I'm happy with them as an entry level gas shock.

Well, I went with the GR-2's. They're in, and except for one of the screws on fold-down seat, it went pretty well. I like the ride and though I've no doubt there are better brands, it's a vast improvement over what I had... And, at least on the test drive, no rubbing.

I'm also impressed with Summit Racing who got them here in less than 24hr for only an additional $19.00.

Yeah, I noticed that as well when I installed mine. That said, minor PITA compared to the benefit of upgrading from Gas-A-Justs.

What he said. Here is an very old article I wrote way back for my club newsletter. This is when the shocks were first released.:

Edelbrock IAS Shock Installation

The Edelbrock IAS shock stands out in performance, in my opinion, compared to other shocks in its price range. Please Note: In the Edelbrock installation instructions they leave out one very important fact. The shocks MAY NOT fit the standard 65-66 Mustang shock tower caps without modification. (This is not true in all cases!) Note: Modifications to the shock may void the warranty.

1. Remove the two shock retaining nuts from the shock tower caps with the car sitting on the ground.

2. Block your rear tires and raise the front of your car securing it safely with jack stands. Remove both front wheels.

3. Unbolt the lower shock-retaining nut at the spring perch and lift the shocks out from the top of the shock towers.

4. Drop in your new IAS shocks from the top of the shock towers and test fit. Make sure the holes in the shock mounting tabs or "bone" of the IAS shock, lines up with the holes in the shock tower caps. If the holes do not line up you will have to cut a slit at the ends of the shock mounting tabs. See pictures.

5. Once the front shocks are in place, reinstall the lower and upper shock retaining nuts. Torque to specs.

6. Place the wheels back on the car and lower the car back to the ground.

7. Block your front wheels. Raise the rear of the car, support it securely on jackstands and remove both rear tires.

8. Remove the top retaining nut from the shocks. This is best done with two people. As you loosen the nut from the top, have someone hold the shock from underneath the car so it does not turn in its bushings. (Shock access points: Coupe-under floor mat in trunk, Convertible-remove seatback and on either side of the top pump, Fastback-rear floor)

9. Remove the lower retaining nuts from the shock plates.

10. Reinstall in reverse order.
