projects: when it is too much to do

When is a project too much to do? I looked at one today and my guess is that the unibody frame is in need of much attention, rockers replacement, lower quarters and one fender, radiator support and possibly others. Now I've done some bodywork on my fastback - lower quarter and in front of the gas tank but not this much metal replacement for sure.

If you are capable of doing all the metal and bodywork yourself, I don't think anything is too much provided you have the time and will to get it done. You just can't cost your labor into it. It's when you have to pay to have these things done that you need to take all the $$$ into consideration. You can get deep upside down in a hurry. At least that's how I look at it.

The cost of replacing interior pieces, trim etc. can get you into trouble too. They kid about the coupes but it is true that you gain a whole lot more value room on a fastback. Plus they are cooler. :hide
 
as others have said, unless you can do all the body work yourself, it is a losing proposition. Unless it happens to hold some significance to you or the world. So easy to wrap up $10K in metal replacement, bodywork, welding. Add a $8-10K paint job and you are nearly upside down in any coupe and most likely convertible.

If you want to see a couple of projects that, in my opinion, are way to far gone to justify the cost take a look at a couple of GPR's builds on here. Yes he is a shop building them for someone else, but there is a 65/66 convertible that is unbelievable. The amount of work going into it cannot be justified to any reasonable person.
 
this makes me long for the "good old days". i remember back in 87 i bought a 65 fastback that needed front pans & a rt qtr for $500. never made it home with the car, doubled my money at a traffic light & hauled it straight to the guys house. also had a 69 mach1 that was a one owner (really was a little old lady's car) car got smacked in the back end & i picked it up for $350 & flipped for $1K. the $300 71 sportsroof i buffed & sold for $1500, the $900 69 vert.... i wont go on....

ha! a little disclaimer: back then i was fresh out of H.S. & had just started working at the glass shop. all the car salesmen in the area knew i was heavy into older mustangs & would call me every time something was traded in. the older ones were only 15-20 yrs old at the time, so was like seeing the 94-2000's on the lots now. many would show up as trade ins during the "push,pull or drag" sales too.

oh, i dont think i'm as arrogant as those F&L guys. i might be an ass at times, but not an arrogant one!

i hear ya brother. all those t.v. shows & televised auctions almost makes it impossible to flip anything like you could back then. everybody thinks they have a gold mine in the back yard :confu
 
He sold it last night and when they got it on the trailer. The new buyer saw just how bad it was. Glad I walked
