Tail Lights are always on ???

I just finished installing a new brake booster and master cylinder. I had also removed the steering column. When I got everything back together and the battery hooked up, the tail lights are on dim. they are a lot brighter when you turn on the lights or step on the brake pedal.

What did I do wrong. I did not have this issue before.

Mid is the expert on this, but I had it happen on the 67 when I was putting it back together. I ended up replacing the harness in the steering column. IIRC the tail light circuit goes through there.

I never understood why but I am not an electronic guy.

Or come loose. Sometimes the flasher is bad too.

Determine if the brake/turn or tail filament is lit. Any dash lights or front and side marker lights on? Get the schematic out and trace the wires plus get a volt meter under the dash and see what colors the wires are that have that stray power.

Figured it out. The emergency switch got pushed in on the steering column. For some reason they are not flashing but with the switch pulled back out, they are off.

Whew...I dodged another bullet.

But John: glad you got it figured out.

Mid you knew the answer, you just wanted to see who here actually knew anything at all!

Hate to be "that guy" but you didn't really fix it yet. You still need to solve why they weren't flashing as they should. Likely just a bad flasher but you should get it straightened out too now that you are aware of the issue.
