Vent window frames replated - oh yeah!!!

These pics do zero justice but was trying to show the before and after of having the vent window frames plated. Actually the unplated one is broken so I had to find another core to replace it.

The area of concern is the small triangle down in the lower exterior corner, with the plates polishing it gone. I made sure the plater knew to not mess this area up and they did not. This was a new plater I wanted to try for they were cheaper and the leadtime was much quicker than my trusty old plater.

Very happy with the results. Now I get to reassemble the frame and start stuffing the doors. Oh joy!!!

Yes, they did a great job. My plater almost sanded that triangle out. Were they able to remove all (if any) pits?

I'll help you with yours if you help me mine. SERIOUSLY!!! I am not looking forward to pulling the repros off and putting the rechromed in.

Those look great, Craig. I have several things I need chromed. I'll get the info from you next weekend, and will maybe give them a yell.

After getting the frames back from the platers, I now see that the stainless steel vertical channels which are rivet to the frames aren't near as pretty so I am going to stop the assembly and have the local polisher remove all the scratches and polish these verticals out. Once done, then I can proceed and rivet the channel into place and move forward.

Justin,
Always willing to help. Let's see what I learn on my car and then we'll proceed on yours.

Let's talk this next weekend. I'm sure you can find a more local plater in the Sacto area. I remember one of the following use to do some extremely fine work. They offered different levels of plating pending how much you wanted to pay.

AAA Polishing & Plating

American Plating Works

They look great! I just broke down my frames for plating. Still have to locate a plater in my area.

Pretty nice looking! All shiney and new looking!

Is it really expensive to get stuff re-chromed? I'm debating if I want to just buy repo stuff or get stuff re-chromed. Would be nice to keep some original parts on my car, but I'm not going to be taking my car to any shows or anything and it will be a DD so not sure it would be worth spending the money on re-chroming stuff.

I do not have any on hands experience with repros but we have a fellow member who has them on his car and hates the fit. He has since then rechromed his originals and will be soon swapping them out.

For those who go for chroming, be VERY careful with those cheap shops. You get what you pay for. I know too many who have tried the cheap route and have been bitten in the buttocks for doing so.

Mine ran $300 for doing the pair.

Rivnuts installed but cant do the mirrors until I finished loading the doors. The mirrors would be in the way.

That would be me!

I can attest to both items, careful what you pay for with Chrome, cheap chrome is just that. Not related to the vent frames but tried for bargain chroming and ruined parts.

As for the repro frames, they actually look good but I don't like the fit with the window curve. I plan on selling them when done as they are great for many people but I am trying to go for top quality. I paid $350 to have my originals replated and they do look amazing!

Now you just need to find time to get back to assembling that car of yours! We need another fastback on the roads of northern California!

Wow, those look great Criag. I was of the mind just to get the repros, but this makes me change my mind. I have one that I can rechrome, but the other is broke. Guess I'll have to run down one and find a plater closer than CA.

Brian,
Which one is broken? left or right? I can get them pretty cheap out here. Is this for a 66?
