Disposing of Fluids???

I know most garbage companies have hazardous waste programs. But, are there other ways?

Brake Fluid - Some states let you mix it with your old oil and bring it to a autoparts store.

Coolant - Some states let you flush it down your toilet and the sewage plant handles it.

Tranny Fluid - ?

Power Steering - ?

You could check with your city or county's waste management folks (basically, the garbage men!). You may find they have recycling centers. I live in the county and am fortunate that we have a recycle site that not only takes fluids, by all types of scrap and even tires. The best part is, a) it's a mile from my house and b) it's FREE!

Not true at all, at least in CA. You have to have special permits to take different kinds of waste, and its entirely optional for each business. Coolant especially does not get mixed in with waste oil, as it's usually recycled. Most commercial oil recycling companies evacuate large waste containers for free (or they pay you for it), as long as they're not contaminated with things like solvents, chlorine, and ethylene glycol. Recyclable waste oil can include hydraulic fluids (including a/t, p/s, and brake fluids).

Like Horseplay said, check your local regulations. Some counties will allow you to dump coolant down the drain (not a septic system) to get dealt with at the waste processing plant. Other counties (like mine) do not allow you to do that, but will take it for free at any local waste management facility (aka 'the dump').

Most chain parts stores take used oil as a courtesy, but rarely will you find a business that will accept coolant, as it's usually much harder to get rid of. Most shops have to pay to have their used coolant tanks emptied.

Seriously, I take the oil to the local Wal-Mart and they dump it in their tank.

The antifreeze is put out as bug bait, kills grasshoppers since you can't get Diazanon (spelling) anymore. Takes care of gophers too!

Tranny fluid - Well, It gets mixed with the diesel fuel in my truck.

Brake fluid is a great paint stripper... I take it to the local Big-O and they add it to their old stuff that the BG guy takes away.

One resourceful guy put his garbage in a box, gift wrapped it, and left it in his unlocked car on the street.
