Does it fit a '67?

OKay I'm very leary that my parking brake handle isn't going to break off in my hand one day.

Does anyone know if this version will work on a '67?

Isn't ??? Then wha' cha' worried about Wilbur? Ohhhh I see, you want it to break off and worried that the 67 handle is just too stout to ever break? Then just buy one of these:

Or is it that you want a lever that says "BRAKE" kinda like a gas cap that says "GAS" or "FUEL".

God, I feel better :bow

I think there's subtle difference between the 65/66 and the 67. My memory of reading Internet posts from 10+ years ago suggests it has something to do with the roll pin.

I'm just thinking of replacing the handle..that's all.

Was all that suppose to help?

Why yes, thank you for asking. But while I'm typing. I just measured the diameter of Red's brake lever shaft vs Shag and they seem to be the same. The only possible issue is what side of the shaft does the holding pin reside in. Looking at the lever, Shag's pin is on the right with only one hole on the right, whereas with Red, the handle is drilled on both sides but the pin is only noticeable on the left.

Unless your handle is splitting, I don't see any real advantage buying a 65/66. You could punch out the old pin and install a new one, or install a small diameter bolt and nut.

As Craig suggests, I believe the difference is whether the hole for the roll pin that retains the handle is drilled only on one side or on both.

Amber's broke and I asked the same thing and was told they wouldn't work. I wasn't looking at changing just the handle.

I am not sure, but I hate the one in the 67. I am just careful not to pull the handle to hard.

I would like to change to the lever on the hump in the 65 and if it looks ok I may do it in the 67.

As I said previously, just remove the handle, see how far from the edge of the shaft the hole is. If there's just one hole, why not run a drill bit through the hole and drill another hole on the other side. Then either get a longer roll pin which would be the cleanest look or install and bolt and nut set up.

Hmmmm, how would you remove the current roll pin while the brake lever is installed in the car?

Smoking fish sure seems much easier :dun

Drill, Baby Drill! Or...break off the handle and saw the roll pin in three pieces and remove.

Buy it and figure it out. Honestly, it can't be too difficult to find a way to make it work. If you want a free 65 set-up to play around with you can have mine for the price of shipping. I'm not using any of it so it's all yours for the asking.

Sounds like it could become a desired mod so might as well contribute to yet another Fix solution.

Sorry but I don't see much of a difference between the 65/66 vs 67/68 to warrant the change. I would consider doing the two hole drill project with a longer roll pin.

The 65/66 is a stronger handle. Why Ford ever changed it I'll never know.

If you could get it changed over to the 67 shaft you might have something. Somewhere I saw a billit handle for the 65/66 style. That would look cool in your car, Mike with the inside of the grooves painted dark blue.

Mikey you are and engineer, are you not paid to figure things out? :jerk

My 67 may be in the garage under a cover waiting for me to restore it, but I remember the E-brake handle from when I first started driving it in high school. It was broke when I got the car, replaced it and figured out it was technique to keep it from breaking again. Never really used the handle, pulled on the shaft mostly. But using the E-brake is something that I always do in every car I drive. Never had to worry about the E-brake freezing up due to weather. :whis

Sorry but what makes it a stronger handle? Details please.

The 67 handle is made differently. the 65 handle is a larger molded plastic piece as seen in the pics above. The 67 is kind of a softer plastic and tends to snap easy. It is molded more with a grain to it IIRC and it is physically thinner in design.

Just curious guys...I'll probably buy the billet handle next time I'm by Mustang Plus. No real need just a hankering. Thanks

Hey Mikey, I think my brother Nick (Bebop390), went through this a couple of years back, you might reach out to him and see what his he has to say...
