i know this has been discussed before, but did anyone come up with a good repop fuel sending unit? i'm tired of draining the tank & pulling this one out every time i turn around. when i bought the car 5 yrs ago, it had a new tank & sender, & i average pulling it out once or twice a year & fooling with it until it works properly. i noticed when i pulled the car in for all of the recent work, that it read 1/4 tank, but when i drained the old gas out, i drained almost 10 gallons. now, it either stays on empty or pegs out full (has 5 gal. in it now). i would like to find a good one, put it in & be done with it!


meant to add, i think most of the issues are due to the ethanol in the gas deteriorating the grommet where the electrical connection post passes thru. it doesnt leak, but whenever the sender acts up, it ends up being loose...

Maybe you could re-rivet that connection? I will say that your comment about the affect of gasoline to the connections is something I've thought about as well back when I was deeply involved with sending units. I still think it would be a good idea for someone (maybe I'll take this on) to find the best produced sending unit, test and tweak each one before sending them out to fellow members.

This still does not address though the situation you are encountering as it goes wacky after you have tweaked it. Are you certain the float does not have pin holes?
 
They might be worth contacting. Note that they are using a 3/8" line for 65-68. I believe 65-67 is 7/16"? I just sent the above company a couple questions about their sending units.

Afret, The sending unit you supplied a link to doesn't sound at all like a drop in unit especially if it is recommended for motors having more than 450 hp and has a pipe diameter of 1/2". Why do you recommend it? What experience do you have with it? Why on earth does anyone need to spend so much on a sending unit which will not easily fasten to the standard 7/16 and 3/8 Mustang fuel lines?

The OP was looking for a nice unit. I used one for awhile when I had a stock tank in the car. Fit right in like the stock unit. Just wanted a bigger line than the tiny 3/8" line.

Compared to the stock unit:

Was it worth 4x the cost of a stock pieces? It does look like a great piece if you were running an EFI setup.
 
Maybe I missed something but why no filter on the inlet tube? And a plastic float? Don't get me wrong, I would not mind spend extra money for anything else let alone a quality fuel sending unit. I just need to justify the additional cost.
 
Actually this one was the prototype unit. The later ones have a metal float I think. Don't see any need for the sock if you run a filter before the carb using a mechanical pump and before the pump with an electric pump.

I went to a fuel cell later which doesn't have a filter/sock either. Just have a 100 micron filter before the pump and a 40 micron filter after.

Just a little size clarification. '65-early '67 used a 5/16" outlet, later '67-'68 went to 3/8". Either of the units will work on '65 -'68 as long as the fuel lines to the engine are sized to match.

i have the same Robbmc sender. If people need something larger than the factory size or one with a return line there isn't much option (besides making one yourself).

it was a drop in to the stock tank for me. I also don't believe the float was plastic.

i'm in the process of running a return line for a non-efi setup, so i'm happy that option is there.

You're right Marco, the pic does show a plastic float. AFAIK it's because that's all he offers...now that is. He used to sell sending units with either plastic or brass floats (for a higher price of course!). I bought one several years back and like yours, was the brass float version.
 
I guess a very important question for any of these reproduction units, especially the expensive ones is, are the sending units accurate in the signal they are sending to the fuel gauge. Afret, 65coupei6 & Ponyman66, did you have to tweak your sending units?
 
Craig, mines still in the box as I decided to go another route with my set up. Since you asked though, I took it out and looked at it. I recall now why it was the more expensive unit (besides having a brass float). It's not a reproduction, but an original Ford unit!

i have one data point for the Robbmc. I ran out of fuel the other night, added 5 gallons (20 gallon tank) and it was around 1/4 on the gauge.
